Many of us have a friend or know someone who has been a victim of identity theft. Identity theft prevention is something we all need to keep in mind.   According to the Javelin strategy and research study, in 2013 there were over 13.1 reported cases of identity theft in the United states. With this being one of the fastest growing crimes in the country, we should all take some precautions and learn some ways to prevent anyone from stealing your personal information. Unfortunately, It can take some people years to find out that their personal information has been stolen. Here are a few tips to prevent identity thirseft :

  • Keep your private information PRIVATE! Shred any documents or papers that may have personal information. Dont leave personal information in your wallet. Store all your personal information in a safe, secure place.  Don’t leave any passwords or your PIN number just laying around anywhere. Getting some type of security software for you computer is also a good idea.
  •  Choose good passwords, something people cant just guess. Don’t include your birthday, phone number or SSN in your passwords. Also, try not to use the same passwords for all of your accounts.
  • Review your bank account regularly. Make sure you do not have any unauthorized charges. If you see anything odd going on, contact your bank immediately!
  • Keep your receipts. Make sure the balances on your bank statement match your receipt.
  • Do not respond to unsolicited inquiries or requests asking for personal information. Whether its by mail, phone or online, make sure you know who you are giving your personal info to.
  • Check your credit score throughout the year. There are three major agencies Equifax, Experian and Transunion.

Following these tips may help lower your chances of getting your identity stolen. If you think you are a victim of identity theft, call your bank and report the crime.
