Firework Safety

Posted by All Solutions Insurance | Posted On July 2nd, 2015 | Firework Safety, General

Who wants to miss Barbecuing, spending time at the beach or pool and dazzling fireworks? These are all ways that we spend celebrating America’s Independence day each year.  For those of you celebrating the 4th of July with a bang, you may want to take some precautions before doing so.  Putting on a fire work show at your home  may cause property damage and bodily injury to your neighbors or guests. You may want to educate yourself on some firework safety before trying this at home.  Insurance companies will not pay a fire-work related claim if:

  • “The state, county or municipal law/ordinance outlaws fireworks or allow only professionals to use them.
  • The state, county or area prohibits the type of firework used, even if purchased legally someplace else.
  • Local law/ordinance requires a permit and you don’t get one.
  • You have violated the law or if circumstances couldn’t be considered accidental.”

Here are some safety tips from the National Council on fireworks safety:

  • Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks.
  • Know your fireworks; read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting.
  • A responsible adult SHOULD supervise all firework activities.  Never give fireworks to children.
  • Alcohol and happy-fourth-july-poster-19997184fireworks do not mix.  Save your alcohol for after the show.
  • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks.
  • Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away.
  • Use fireworks OUTDOORS in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles.
  • Never relight a “dud” firework.  Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
  • Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby.
  • Never carry fireworks in your POCKET or shoot them into METAL or GLASS containers.
  • Do not experiment with homemade fireworks.
  • Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until the next day.
  • AA regulations PROHIBIT the possession and transportation of fireworks in your checked baggage or carry-on luggage.
  • Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department.
